Warrnambool City Council’s annual Footpath Renewal and Major Road Rehabilitation programs, are set to commence on Monday (February).

Seven roads and intersections and 35 footpaths throughout the city are set to be upgraded as part of the works, with over $1 million allocated in the Council’s budget to complete the works.

Warrnambool City Council Director City Infrastructure David Leahy said that asset maintenance was a crucial function of Council.

“Each year, Council carries out maintenance and repairs on assets such as roads, footpaths, playgrounds, bridges and buildings" he said.

“In 2019 the Essential Services Commission recognised that even after taking all reasonable steps to find efficiencies, the city’s assets were deteriorating faster than we could fund their maintenance.

“All additional funds raised via the Rate Cap Variation have gone into asset renewal such as footpaths as well as playgrounds at Aitkins Road, Pappas Drive and Mahogany Gardens.”

Pertobe Road between Merri Street and the Surf Club entrance will be the first section of road rehabilitated, with works expected to run from February 1-3.

Work will then proceed as follows over the next three weeks.

- Banyan Street – Lava Street to Raglan Parade

> Moore Street – Kiama Avenue Intersection

> Whites Road – Wares Road, Sharpe Avenue Intersection

> Swinton Street – Kennedy Street Due West

> Mahoneys Road – Huntingfield Drive Intersection

> Rosemary Court – Veronica Court to Bowl

Motorists can expect some delays, but through traffic will still be possible under the supervision of traffic controllers.

Approximately 2km of footpaths will be renewed between February and June, with the following works to be completed in February.

> Mahoneys Road (right footpath) – Huntingfield Drive to Dobson Wary

> Timor Street (left footpath) – Hart Street to Hider Street

> Kelp Street (left footpath) – Merri Street to Timor Street

> Lava St East (right footpath) – Lyndoch Avenue to Flaxman Street
