Blanket Appeal

Blanket Appeal

Not everyone has the luxury of ducted heating, electric blankets or warm doonas, so Portland District Health is launching an appeal to make sure everyone in the community stays warm during winter.

The annual PDH blanket and coat drive is on again, with an appeal to local residents to help less fortunate people in the community.

Donations are being accepted between Monday July 12 and Wednesday July 21 with a labelled collection tub outside the first automatic main entrance door at PDH.

In 2020 a record 24 boxes of items were donated and PDH hopes to exceed that target this year.

PDH’s community engagement and fundraising officer, Carolyn Malseed, said donations were being sought of clean coats, jackets and blankets in good condition to be distributed free to children and adults through the local Salvation Army.

All donations will remain in the local community after ensuring COVID-19 protocols are followed prior to distribution.

The winter appeal was introduced in 2015 as a blanket and non-perishable food drive, while the focus since 2018 has been on blankets and coats.

Community support has grown in recent years from 14 boxes of items collected in 2018 to 22 in 2019 and 24 last year.

Ms Malseed said this year’s appeal was more important than ever given the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on the economy.

“We hope local people understand how important it is for everyone to feel warm over winter and make a donation to this appeal,” she said.
