L2P Calls For Mentors

L2P Calls For Mentors

Mentors needed for vital program

The Warrnambool TAC L2P Program is calling for local residents to consider becoming a mentor driver, as they look to keep up with the demand of young people needing driving experience.

Program coordinator Phil Jones, says the initiative pairs mentors with young people aiming to achieve their 120 hours, who may not have access to a vehicle or supervising driver.

"We want to try and keep building the program, and with the L2P program the main factor in the growth of the program is mentors" he said.

"That flows on to the amount of people we can have in the program, we've actually got a waiting list at the moment of around 17 young people".

The program is currently coordinated by Brophy Family and Youth Services, with mentors only needing to give up a handful of hours once a week, to be able to assist.

"When a person comes on board as a mentor, they do a days training, they get matched the best we can with a young person in terms of interests and times available" Mr Jones said.

"They'll pick up the car, go and pick up the young person and go for a two hour drive, they'll come up with a bit of a plan depending on how many hours the young person has got, as to where they go and what sort of things are going to be useful".

Vehicles are supplied, and before being matched with a volunteer mentor, learners have access to up to seven free driving lessons with a professional instructor.
