Data shows it’s time to act on dangerous Warrnambool intersection says Britnell

New data released by the Australian Roads Research Board, has prompted calls from a local MP, to fix the intersection at Botanic Road, Fitzroy Road and Raglan Parade.

Member for South West Coast and Shadow Minister for Rural Roads Roma Britnell labelled the intersection as dangerous, and says the data shows between 2014 and late 2019 there have been four crashes resulting in minor injuries and four that resulted in serious injuries requiring hospitalisation.

Ms Britnell said the data only captures reported accidents and doesn’t take into account the near misses and more recent incidents at that intersection.

“I’ve had many residents of the area contact me about this intersection and have written to the Minister for Roads about the issue" Ms Britnell said.

“This data backs up what we already know and puts in black and white that there is a significant safety issue that needs to be addressed.”

Ms Britnell said the map also highlighted several other roads that have a high level of crashes that would not be of surprise to residents"

“Roads like the Heywood-Woolsthorpe Road, the Princes Highway, Caramut Road, the Great Ocean Road and the Hopkins Highway all have a really high number of crashes on the map for the period captured in the data,” Ms Britnell said.

“The Government needs to address the issues with these roads as a whole, the surfaces and road shoulders must be addressed, and then other treatments can be considered"
