Police across the South West will be out in force across the Easter Long Weekend, with the road policing Operation Nexus commencing this morning.

The Easter Operation will run until 11.59pm on Monday, with police to be targeting speed, drink and drug driving and mobile phone use.

With large numbers of people traveling long distances or on unfamiliar roads to get to holiday destinations, police will also be targeting fatigue, asking drivers to rest regularly.

"We're asking people to slow down and not make those poor decisions to speed or drive while impaired" said Warrnambool Police Senior Sergeant Shane Keogh.

"Statistics will show that 34% of fatalities, speeding was the contributing factor, so we have highways out there that link our towns back to Melbourne and Colac and right through to Portland, they can be dangerous places to be"

"If you're traveling along and see a driver reviver spot, pullover and have a cuppa and have a rest for 15 minutes, adding that time on to your trip is preferable to becoming a statistic".

VICSES Driver Reviver sites will be operating at 25 roadside locations to encourage drivers to stop, rest and refresh.

Over the past five Easter long weekends, a total of 33,776 traffic and criminal offences have been detected, including 15,792 for speeding.
